HÀ NỘi — Speaker of the National Assembly Vương Đình Huệ met Wednesday with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou in Hà Nội.
The Greek leader is on her first official visit to Việt Nam.
The legislator congratulated Sakellaropoulou as the first female president of Greece, a country which occupies an important position in Europe.
President Huệ said he believed the President’s visit to Việt Nam was an important milestone, helping to further promote the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.
He expressed satisfaction that the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries have been continuously strengthened and developed, as evidenced by the exchanges of delegations at all levels.
Trade and economic cooperation has developed positively, especially since the implementation of the Europe-Việt Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
President Huệ proposed that the two countries continue to promote cooperation in areas that make Greece and Việt Nam strong, such as maritime economy, shipbuilding, seaports and tourism.
He also suggested that the two sides soon sign a double taxation avoidance agreement and a maritime transport agreement to create conducive conditions for trade and commerce.
President Huệ said he hoped Greece would soon approve the EU-Việt Nam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and the removal of the yellow card for Vietnamese seafood. The two sides should cooperate closely and take advantage of the benefits of EVFTA and EVIPA, especially to protect the legitimate interests of enterprises of both countries in investment and trade activities in each other’s market during the post-pandemic period, he said.
The NA leader thanked the president and the Greek government for continuing to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese nationals to live, study and work in Greece.
He proposed that the two sides promote the establishment of relations between localities in the two countries, helping to enhance people-to-people exchanges.
Greek President Sakellaropoulou appreciated Việt Nam’s warm welcome and said the two countries could promote cooperation in the fields of history, culture and common policies despite the geographical distance.
In line with President Huệ’s view, she said, based on the EVFTA, the two countries should base themselves on each country’s potential to increase trade revenue.
She said the visit was aimed at promoting bilateral cooperation and said she believed that after the signing of the maritime transport agreements and the avoidance of double taxation, the trade and economic relations between the two countries would be strengthened. .
President Huệ said the two countries should also strengthen cooperation on innovation.
The Greek president said Greece has experience in protecting heritage against climate change, education and tourism.
She said that the Vietnamese community in Greece and the Greek community in Việt Nam will contribute to closer cooperation between the two countries.
Relations between the two national assemblies of the two countries have continued to strengthen and develop over the past year. However, delegation exchanges have been halted due to COVID-19. President Huệ said he wanted the Greek President to support strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
President Huệ thanked and hoped that Greece would continue to support the position of ASEAN and Việt Nam on the East Sea based on respect for international laws, as well as supporting other mechanisms with the central role of the ASEAN. —VNS
