Greek Viber users made 1 billion calls in 2021, Rakuten Viber, the company behind the popular calling and texting app, revealed on Thursday.
In Greece, over 90% of smartphones have the app installed, making it the best chat app in the country.
Greeks surpassed 90 million hours of talk time in the past 12 months, and they also sent 700 text messages per second using the popular cross-platform app. This results in a 20% increase in call time and a 15% increase in the number of text messages sent. The highest volume of calls and messages was on popular holidays like New Year’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
These figures are for occasional use of the app by regular users, but the company pointed out that companies’ Viber accounts had also increased in the previous year by 79% in Greece (55% globally). In total, commercial messages sent in Greece increased by 82%, a figure that includes customer support messages (up 36%), promotional messages with offers and discounts (up 30%) and an increase a staggering 193% in the number of regarding messages for order confirmations, shipment tracking and appointment reminders.
Ad impressions in Greece (the number of times a user sees an ad on Viber, even indirectly) in 2021 increased by 16% (70% globally), with sectors seeing a 90% increase in health and well-being, a 56% increase in energy-related transport advertising content and a 51% increase in transport-related content.
The app has also seen a significant increase in new advertising categories such as recruitment and local businesses, reflecting the pandemic’s influence on the job market, Rakuten pointed out. More than 8,500 businesses worldwide rely on Viber to communicate with their customers, he pointed out. Apart from mobiles, the app is also available for all desktop and mobile operating systems.
“The Covid-19 pandemic continued to change people’s daily lives in 2021, and how society coped with this new reality,” said Atanas Raykov, EMENA Senior Manager of Rakuten Viber, adding that “I am happy that users and businesses have recognized Viber as the primary way to connect in these trying times.
In 2021, Viber celebrated its 11th anniversary and crossed the billion install threshold on the Android mobile platform alone, and the Greek government uses it for public announcements such as pandemic information.
