How did “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” conventions manage to become a mega hit?

Great romantic comedies have the potential to be hugely successful.

I love a great Hollywood achievement that involves someone sticking to their guns and believing in themselves. That’s what Nia Vardalos did with it My Fat Greek Weddingwhile subverting the conventions she had seen in previous romantic comedies.

Do you remember where you were when My Fat Greek Wedding came out of? There was a time when I could feel a palpable buzz in the air. The trailer played in front of a movie I saw with my parents, and they laughed so hard that I knew this movie would be a hit. And it was…a huge success, actually. It became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, grossing $241.4 million in North America, although it never reached number one at the box office upon release.

Made on a budget of just $5 million, it ultimately grossed over $368.7 million worldwide, becoming one of the best romance films of the 21st century.

But what made a film like this so successful? I mean, he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay! I think the answer lies in how the movie changed conventions and stayed true to its characters.

Let’s dig!

How did you My Fat Greek Wedding Will Buck Conventions become a mega hit?

For those unfamiliar with the story, My Fat Greek Wedding began as a one-woman play written by and performed by Vardalos. She performed for six weeks at the Hudson Backstage Theater in Los Angeles in the summer of 1997. The motivation for writing the play, according to Vardalos, was “to have a better agent”.

Well, the play was hugely popular, and a bunch of Hollywood executives saw it, including the actress Rita Wilson. Wilson is part Greek and the story echoed in her. She had her husband, tom hank, to see it, and they both saw the film’s immediate potential. They joined as producers and released the story to market.

Even when people backed down and tried to change the story, Vardalos and his producers stood firm. It was a Greek story about the Greek people. Hanks said he always wanted Vardalos to perform because it “brings a lot of integrity to the piece because it’s Nia’s version of her own life and her own experience. screen and people recognize it.”

They teamed up with Playtone and IFC Films and made the movie for $5 million. They had no idea they had a megahit in their hands.

How did you My Fat Greek Wedding Breaking the gender mould?

When you look at the romantic comedy genre, you usually see the story of a young woman in a town making her way in the world. There is nothing wrong with that. But the public was bored to see this protagonist. And there were a lot of people asking to see themselves on screen.

This film told the story of a woman who lived at home with her parents in the suburbs. His family was ethnic, loud and proud. And she was close to them. To be romantic in her life, you had to not only respect her, but also respect the family. We also lost Pygmalion’s makeover and just saw someone embrace adulthood and get a haircut and makeup.

While I don’t think it will go without cringe, we have seen the patriarch of the family, accustomed to women staying home and having babies, loosening his reins on the family and the old way of life, and kissing women at work and going to school. Our main character never has to sacrifice who she is to get what she wants. In fact, she gets to kiss more and see that it opens doors for her.

These clever shifts in tropes and conventions give the film a fresh feel and a universal story.
