New illusion against Greece by the Turkish opposition newspaper Sözcü, which denounces Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou for having visited islands which – according to the publication’s provocative allegations – are under “Greek occupation”.
“Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou demonstrates Greek sovereignty over the Turkish islands under Greek occupation. Sakellaropoulou visited the island of Agathonisi on June 29, 2020, on the island of Kinaros on December 23, 2020 and finally to Gavdos on January 6, 2022 ”, declared a Turkish journalist. Saygı Öztürk.
“The president was greeted with a military ceremony in the port of Gavdos, as she greeted the Greek flag brought by Greek soldiers to the island,” he continued.
“The president was accompanied by two priests appointed by the Greek Patriarchate of Constantinople in Gavdos”, added the journalist.
The Turkish journalist quotes a statement from the former Secretary General of the Defense Ministry, retired officer and geopolitical-military analyst Ümit Yalım, one of the main critics of the status quo in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Yalım recalled that in 1996 a Turkish admiral had prevented the Greek navy in the area of Gavdos.
“The island of Gavdos, which is one of the 20 Turkish islands occupied by Greece, is of strategic importance,” said retired Colonel Ümit Yalım.
The Sözcü is a Kemalist newspaper with inflammatory articles against Greece, which recently falsely claimed that the Greek and Turkish coast guards clashed in Imia.
