Tom’s Deli will be replaced by a Greek cafe

A WINCHESTER institution looks set to close as a new business has been cleared to take the next step to open.

Tom’s Deli on St George’s Street has been around for over 30 years and at the start of last year the businesses went on the market.

Owner Tom Romita is looking to retire and the premises appear to have been bought by a Greek cafe/restaurant.

Marshall Eaton Holdings has obtained permission to install an extraction system at the restaurant. His food operation is believed to trade as Yiayias Kitchen, which currently owns a restaurant in Farnham.

The application form states: “The current owner cooks food on site (an Italian deli/café) in the kitchen at the back of the building. He operates this kitchen with a simple extraction system and often has to leave the door open to allow ventilation.

“The new owner wants to invest in the fitted kitchen and improve ventilation for staff and customers.

“The new owner will operate a Greek café and does not seek to intensify the use of the building. The type of food that will be cooked will be no different from the food currently being cooked on site and will include traditional Greek recipes.

He understood that the company hopes to sign the lease early this year.

Tom started the business as a newsagent in the late 1980s before gradually transforming it into a delicatessen using his family ties to the Puglia region in southern Italy.

He previously said in a statement: “Tom’s Deli is a much-loved Italian restaurant in the heart and soul of Winchester. After 30 years, owner Tom Romita is now looking to hand over the reins as he considers retirement. .

“Tom and his wife Hiromi hope to travel to their two hometowns: Bisceglie in Puglia and Japan, where Hiromi is from.

“Tom’s son, Yuichi, is also studying in Japan to become a master potter, so there are many reasons why Tom wants to see more people.

“But first, Tom is keen to work with the new owner to ensure a smooth transition and plans to be around for a while.”
